HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION

CITIZENS GAIN ONE SEAT MR F. I. SUTTON DISPLACES MR N. R. FORBES The Citizens’ Association gained one new member to bring its strength to four, compared with Labour’s one, in the election for ttie city seats on the Lyttelton Harbour Board. The new member is Mr F. I. Sutton. a launch service proprietor at Lyttelton for 12 years. Mr Sutton, who lives at Sumner, is a son of Mr F. E. Sutton, a member for many years. Mr Sutton unseated Mr N. R. Forbes, a Labour candidate with many years’ experience in local body politics. In spite of the gain by the Citizens’ Association, Mr G. Manning (Labour) maintained his place at the top of the poll. Another sitting candidate to lose his seat was Mr J. Halligan; who was -defeated by Mr L. G. Amos in the election for the representative of the Waimairi county and the Riccarton borough. Labour’ gained a seat on the board in the election for. the Lyttelton and Banks Peninsula representative, Mr W. B. Laing easily beating Mr L. J. Shuker, Independent. The previous representative. LIGHT POLLING

With the fine day on Saturday some of those interested in locrl body administration thought there might be a heavy poll; but the reverse was the case. , x . Some polling places were kept busy throughout the day, but others in outlying suburbs had few voters. Those working in marquees—and some of them were among the busiest polling places—had a trying time with the heat. ~ „ _ The Returning Officer (Mr H. S. Feast) late on Saturday night paid a tribute to the deputy-returning officers and the polling staff. All had worked extremely well, he said, and the results had come in without delays. The staff working at the City Council chambers counting the votes and amalgamating returns were not clear until 2.10 a.m. yesterday, the final result being that of the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
