CLEAR-CUT WIN BY MR MACFARLANE

MARGIN OF 3661 OVER MR MACGIBBON

In winning the Mayoralty on Saturday, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.. entered his fourth term as Mayor of Christchurch and gained the biggest majority he has had in his four successful contests. He polled 19,949 votes to 16,288 recorded for Mr W. S. MacGibbon, the Citizens’ Association candidate, who stood against Mr Macfarlane in a three-way contest in 1950. Mr Macfarlane began his first term as Mayor in 1938. He won again in 1950, but was a minority Mayor. Three years ago against Mr J. L. Hay he had an election-night majority of 2269. The first return from the 129 polling places came in soon after voting closed at 7 p.m. Returns continued steadily to the Returning Officer (Mr H. S. Feast), who was assisted by his Deputy-Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie). Progress returns were prepared by Mr Feast after a group of every five or six booths, and at no stage was Mr Mac Gibbon showing a lead, although early in the progress returns Mr Macfarlane’s margin was small. With 55 of the booth results in, Mr Mac Gibbon was almost 2000 votes behind, but he made up a lot of ground with the next few results. He was 1100 behind with 86 returns in, but then Mr Macfarlane forged ahead steadily as every progress return was prepared. By 8 o'clock it was obvious that there was most unlikely to be a change in the Mayoralty, and by 8.40 p.m. the final result was known. There are almost 1300 postal votes and some declaration votes to be counted, but they cannot affect the election. Details of the polling were:—
