CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING
REGISTRATION FEE PROCEDURE
PROTEST FROM SOUTH CANTERBURY
The Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association will be asked to endorse the action of the Canterbury Cross-country Running Management Committee in fixing May 31 as the date by which all registration fees paid by harriers must be forwarded by clubs or sub-centres to the management committee. This was decided at a meeting of the cross-country committee when a protest from the South Canterbury Harrier Management Committee was considered. The South Canterbury committee had written to the Canterbury centre, asking whether the Canterbury cross-country committee had the authority to fix the date. The South Canterbury committee also asked whether runners who were registered on the track were entitled to deduct the Is 6d registration fee from the levies paid to the Canterbury crosscountry committee. It was decided to advise the centre that, when the levies were fixed each year for cross-country runners, no specific provision was made for the registration fee payable to the New Zealand association, but an over-all fee was fixed, based on what was considered necessary to administer the sport efficiently. In cases where it was necessary, the registration fee was deducted and forwarded to the New Zealand association. “We are charged with the responsibility of administering the sport.” said the president (Mr W. A. Kennedy), “and we can fix any closing date that is convenient. They have a clear two months from the start of the season in which to, make their payments.” “The important aspect is whether the registrations are effective when they are paid to the South Canterbury Harrier Management Committee',’’ said Mr M R Craighead. "Is it acting as our official representative?” When it was suggested that al! the South Canterbury entries for inter-club races should be forwarded through the South Canferbur.v committee, with its certification that all runners had paid their registration fees to it. Mr Craighead said: “That will put us back where w £ re two ¥, ears a B°- when had difficulty in collecting the money from South Canterbury. If South Canterbury is not satisfied in this matter, it is up to its delegates to raise the matter at tne annual meeting of cross-country running oelegates.”
Other speakers also said the present system meant a simplification of the clerical work Previously some runners claiming that they were registered on the track, made deductions from their fees, and later it was found that they were not registered for that year, and difficultv was experienced in obtaining the outstanding fees
