ROAD TUNNEL AUTHORITY

EARLY CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES

A conference of local bodies to consider the establishment of the Road Tunnel Authority in Christchurch has been called for December 5 at 2.30 p.m.

This action was taken yesterday by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.). He said that under the Tunnel Road Act, which came into force on November 1. two months was allow’ed for the Authority to be established, and it should therefore be in existence by January 1. Responsibility for taking initial steps was nYt prescribed, Mr Macfarlane said, but with the interruption caused by the local body elections and Christmas coming soon afterwards, it was essential that there should be no delay. The act also failed to prescribe how groups of boroughs and counties, combining to appoint representatives, should make their choice (there are two groups in this situation—boroughs extending from Rangiora, round Banks Peninsula, and down to Ashburton and counties ranging from North to Mid-Canter-bury). It is these groups which were being invited to confer to consider a scheme of election. The GovernorGeneral. Christchurch City Council, and Lyttelton Borough Council vould be able to make their nominations directly.
