AUCKLAND. 19 Chinese gooseberries from New Zealand are establishing themselves in London as ideal for the palate of the true epicurean. One of the best known of the quality restaurants recently advertised the dish as part of a particularly attractive meal. A New Zealander whose nostalgia led him into extravagance found that the gooseberries, less appetising than those he remembered, cost him 5d each. He thinks tree tomatoes would sell well in Britain. The gooseberries have a novelty appeal, there is little waste, the fruit keeps very well and is excellent for desserts. A winter fruit, Chinese gooseberries are mostly grown in the Auckland district and in the Bay of Plenty. To be able to grow them successfully strong support is needed for the vines and both male and female plants are necessary. They have become increasingly popular in Auckland in the last 10 years, and large quantities have been sold during the winter. About five growers in Te Puke, including Mr G. Bayliss and Mr E. J M. McLoughlin, have been experimenting in sending them overseas. Five years ago they sent a token shipment to a London firm through the Fruitgrowers' Federation. Auckland, to try them out. The firrp asked
for more. This year they sent about 10 tons, to London and Australia. Mr F. M. Conway, the manager of the federation, said that prepared lots of 14 pounds each are packed in trays an, specially labelled The federation has taken selected orchards under its wing and is helping them in the London and Australian trade. Mr Conway said that the Te Puke climate is suitable for Chinese gooseberries and that further south they are subjected to frosts. He said the trade has been going on successfully for over three years.
