BIG FIRE IN SYDNEY
20 FIREMEN INJURED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 5 Firemen early today doused a stubborn fire which had raged for 12 hours through the top three storeys of the tallest building in inner Sydney—the 13-floor headquarters of Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia). Ltd. Nearby streets were cordoned off last night by the police as it was feared that a 100 ft steel lattice radio tower on top of the 150 ft building might fall. More than 20 firemen were reported injured. Hundreds of workers were evacuated from the building when the fire broke out at 3 p.m. yesterday. The studios and offices of radio station 2CH was badly damaged. The station was off the air for eight minutes, and then resumed transmission from an emergency site in the city. About 60 women watching a broadcast were rushed from the studios in lifts a few minutes before the flames put the lifts out of action.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
