LONGEVITY IN CATTLE
From Otago comes a report of longevity in cattle. A recent Christchurch visitor to the Gladbrook Estate. Middlemarch, was shown over the stud Aberdeen Angus herd. The owner. Mr J. D. Roberts, pointed out a cow which was 20 years old. and still rearing a calf. She was a particularly good speciment to have remained in a stud herd for so long. Her performance was all the more meritorious in that she had regularly produced highpriced calves. It is worth mentioning that the Gladbrook herd is the oldest surviving Aberdeen Angus herd in the South Island, and that the present
owner’s grandfather was the first man to import Aberdeen Angus cattle to the North Island. He later came to the South Island, and founded the Gladbrook herd in 1891.
