Nuclear—Whipsnade For Timaru Club’s Double

RACING

Overboard was scratched yesterday for today’s Timaru Cup, and will run in the second leg of the double, the Seadown Handicap. Scuppered, a stablemate of Overboard, will represent Mr J. B. Douglas-Clifford in the Timaru Cup, the first leg of the double on the opening day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s winter meeting.

The ruling Timaru Cup favourite is Nuclear, a four-year-old half-brother to Golden Galleon, a Wellington Cup winner. Nuclear will do his early five-year-old racing in Australia. He is owned by Mr G. J. Barton, for whom Western Front won this race five years ago. Nuclear will be ridden by the leading horseman. R. J Skelton, who won the 1954 Timaru Cup on Ngapunawai. Blue Count strengthens the possibility of a Wingatui success. Blue Count, a three-year-old Count Rendered gelding, showed some class in his two-year-old racing, and made his stamina evident when he won at the Southland winter meeting last month. Horatius will be another strong Wingatui representative. Southland stables should be creditably represented by Good Abbot and Baffling Eyes, both good winter performers. Riccarton’s best may be the Oamaru Winter Cup winner. Relinquish, the beaten favourite in this race last year. Relinquish will be ridden by E. G. Low, who won on Golden Jest, which narrowly beat Baffling Eyes last year. Seadown Handicap Whipsnade and Persia, the latter a stablemate of Nuclear, will be two strong light-weight contenders for the Seadown Handicap. Regardless has shaped like an improver over the last week and may also play a big role in the finish. The re-entry clause for horses balloted' out did not apply after noon yesterday. Automatic scratchings for the Winchester Handicap were Larboard Watch. Glencarron. Hystaway. Waltz, and Flving Spark, and for the Tekapo Hurdles* they were Cristatus. Happy, Monic. Salabeau, and The Fluke. Cristatus was a double acceptor, and will run in the Timaru Cup. The Bruiser was scratched on Thursday for the Kingsdown Hack Handicap and Smart. Bonny Prim. Super Girl. King Robin. Marsana. and Monoglide were scratched yesterday. The last five of those horses were originally balloted out but Bonny Prim and Super Girl would have been able to return to the field. Yesterday the weather in Timaru was fine and the track in good order. Selections are: — 11 a.m.—Winchester Handicap: Renloch, Nehru. Lord Fane. 11.40 a.m.—Tekapo Hack Hurdles: Bosky.
