PROSPECTS FOR TODAY

AVONDALE CLUB

Bretton. Royal Heritage, and Fair Town may dispute the finish in the Rawson Handicap on the first day of the Avondale Jockey Club’s winter meeting tomorrow. The Rawson Handicap, of a mile and three furlongs, is a good test at the best of times, but it promises to be particularly hard today, because the ground was well soaked by heavy rain in the last day or two and it is likely to become very heavy.

Bretton may be near winning form. He had a long string of unplaced performances before running second to Spring Fair in the Cornwall Handicap, of one mile and a quarter, at Ellerslie on June 2. That was his last attempt, and his best for almost a year. Bretton is in his element when the ground is very heavy, and Royal Heritage and Fair Town also like the wet. Moreover, they are in good form. They finished fourth and fifth respectively at their last starts in the York Handicap, at Ellerslie on June 3.

The double will be the Rawson Handicap and the Kia Ora Handicap, the distance hack event.

In spite of having 9-12 and 9-7 respectively. Black Amber and Dalstar should he most favoured for the Kia Ora Handicap. They have shown their best form recently, and it seems likely that they will - go on with it in the top staying company.

Ecilagwen, Mon Espoir, and Royal Diamond stay moderately well, and they may be the best of the remainder. Selections are:— 11 a.m.—Mount Albert Steeplechase: Lochain. Pad, Uncle Bob. 11.45 a.m.—First Oratia Handicap: Cadet, Arva, Peter Keith. 12.30 p.m.—Windsor Hurdle Handicap; Rangi’s Luck, Fordson, The McDonough. 1.20 p.m.—Rawson Memorial Handicap.
