PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS
NEED FOR EDUCATION DISCUSSED
A suggestion to the Christchurch City Council that key pedestrian crossings in the city be policed by the traffic department for a period of three to four weeks, will be made by the Automobile Association (Canterbury).
The chairman of the finance committee (Mr E. R. Casbolt) told the association’s council that the need to educate pedestrians regarding their rights and obligations had been emphasised at the committee's last meeting. Every member felt that the rule regarding crossings was not understood by motorists or pedestrians. He felt that the regulation should be fully explained in the newspapers. Mr A. R. Barnsdale said he understood that the traffic department officers had no control over pedestrians. They could not really control them legally. Mr W. C. Prosser: But - they can educate them.
The secretary (Mr E. S. Palliser) said he believed there was a defect in the Police Offences Act that stooped them from doing something about it if pedestrians did not comply with directions.
The council adopted the committee’s recommendation.
