Housewives Will Sample Unpopular Types Of Fish

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, June 22. Housewives are testing a claim that several varieties of fish which the public have so far refused to buy because of their cheapness or ugliness are as good as the generally-accepted varieties.

Today, the Wellington Fish Retailers’ Association supplied the president of the Wellington Housewives’ Associa-

tion (Mrs M. L. McLean) with samples of six fish.

Identified by numbers only, the fish were distributed among members of the association, who will try them and report their opinions. A proportion of the samples ar e popular fish, and the re st are the unappreciated varieties. The samples were filleted so that the housewives could not tell the variety of fish by appearance, and would start eating the fish without knowing what it was.

The fish were beautifully filleted and looked very nice," said Mrs McLean. I will get the reports from housewives on how they enjoy them during the weekend." The unappreciated varieties were on sale in at least one Wellington shop today, said the secretary of the Fish Retailers’ Association (Mr A. T Hailey). His association was convinced the public would not tell the difference between these fish and the usual popular varieties.

A problem with two of the cheaper varieties of fish, whiptail and red cod was that they did not retain their confroz?n, said Mr Bailey. Soft fish like this will not keep in a refrigerator for more than three or days." he said. “Retailers cannot afford to take too much of it, as they ateF ” I ° ney if H ’ S nOt SOld immed i-

The soft-fleshed fish was excellent eating if cooked when fresh, but broke up and became waterlogged after being frozen, said Mr Eailey. 5
