LORD ROWALLAN SELECTED FOR ASHBURTON FIRST LEG

RACING

Royal Warrant was scratched yesterday for the Aiaronan Handicap, the main race and first leg of the double at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s winter meeting today. All has not been well with Royal Warrant since he contested the Queen Elizabeth Handicap on the third day of the Dunedin winter meeting. It is thought he has a ricked back.

His withdrawal has tended to firm Lord Rowallan in iavour, and has brightened the prospects, also, of Russleigh and Paulette, which are expected to be Lord Rowallan’s strongest opponents.

Irajan and Inspire will form a popular bract et for the Mayfield Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double. Eoth are trained by W. N. S. Barr Eoth have won over the distance, and are at handy places in the weights Trajan's third at Waimate last month stamped him as an early winner. The distance was one mile and 150 yards, and was too short for him on the small Waimate course. Inspire will be ridden by N. Eastwood. who rode him to an easy win in this race last year. He has not been consistent, but his best would be more than adequate in this field. Super Corn, top weight with 9-8, is running out his hack nominations. He has been racing very solidly, and has been booked for a trip to Australia with his stablemate, Ray Ribbon.

Massador and Beau Chat appeal most of the others, although Sun House could be a strong challenger from her position in the handicap. Fastness and the The Sloucher were scratched yesterday for the Mayfield Hack Handicap.

The Wingatui-trained Composition gained supporters for the Dromore Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase when he schooled well on his home track on Thursday. Composition may shape better than his stablemate, Gypsy Boy, but will not find it easy to master the Riccarton-trained Sultry. Sultry was running on for second behind King Willow at Oamaru. It was an encouraging start over country, and should have improved her Few, if any. in this field should be Sultry s master for stamina.
