BRITAIN MAKES THE SHIPS!
FREE ENTERPRISE SUPREME A recent news item announced that the Furness Shipbuilding Company Limited has won a contract from the Gulf Oil Corporation of the United States for the construction of six tankers. Of theie four will be of 40,000 tons and two of 18,000. Costing a basic aggregate of thirteen million pounds, the snips will be delivered by the end of 1961.
In times like the present, when competition is at its keenest and nationalism not without weight, it makes good reading that a British company has been able to secure such a contract.
Shipbuilding and Britain have long been closely associated. British-built ships have earned by sheer worth a reputation for supreme quality. By whom has this reputation been won? By the scores of shipbuilding firms in Great Britain working in competition under Free Enterprise. Unhindered by the crippling administrative labyrinths of State concerns, and unfettered by inevitable Treasury overcaution, they have gone out and earned world supremacy in the invigorating arena of Free Enterprise. Issued in the interests of all sections of the community by the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand. —Advt.
