“SHORT SHRIFT”
Sir,—For many years I have laughed smugly to myself whenever I heard, or read, the words “short shift,” thinking that the poor ignorant clots presumably meant “short shrift,” and didn’t know any better. Now I read the words, “short shift.’-’ in a leading article in “The Press”—Wednesday, June 20. Have I perhaps been just a bit too smart?—Yours, etc., ALEC. June 21, 1956.
[Keep on laughing. The error, regrettably, was ours.—Ed., “The Press.”]
