MALAYA
Sir.—lt seems peculiar that Mr Hartley should claim to support the principles of truth and human right while denying their application to Malayans and Cypriots. The principles are universal or tney are nothing. This view that one accepts such principles “because we are British” smacks at racial chauvinism, and is best left to people like the Nazis who claimed the monopoly of racial virtue, together with the right to conquer, “protect and guide”—ana exterminate—as they considered necessary. Few New Zealanders would accept that view. The war was fought for the right of all peoples to self-determination and not merely those whom Mr Hartley considers not “phoney.” Whether “phoney” or not could be decided by plebiscite —to which Mr Hartley would not agree despite his assertion that “they want us to stay.”—Your, etc..
