FIRE BOARD WARNING ON INSTALLATION

DANGERS OF FAULTY WORKMANSHIP

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 19.

Faulty installation of space heaters is reported to be creating a dangerous fire hazard in Auckland. Last winter there were five reported fires from this cause, and there have been four more already this year. The Chief Fire Officer to the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board (Mr G. Drummond) suspects that there have been other fires which may have started in the same way, although the cause is not definitely known. Issuing a public warning today, Mr Drummond said the increasing popularity of space heaters had resulted in a leaning toward the “do it yourself” method of installation.

If the householder installed the appliance himself, he should take the greatest care. Mr Drummond said. He should insist on getting complete instructions from the vendor of the appliance. and carry them out to the last detail.

If there was any doubt at all. the householder should consult a building inspector or the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board, he said. “Most firms dealing in space heating appliances have an installation service.” said Mr Drummond. “Although this adds to jhe initial cost, it will in genera! ensure the observance of maximum safety precautions?*
