HOAX CAUSES POLICE SEARCH
THREE MEN FINED FOR DISORDERLY BEHAVIOUR
(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, June 12. A practical joke which resulted in a police search of the banks of the Wairua river for a woman’s body was described when three young men appeared in the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court before Mr J. R. Herd, S.M.
The men were Peter James Greenfield, a farmer, of Houto, Warwick Earle Sheffield, a labourer, of Maunu, and Jansen Bertram Greenfield, a farmer, of Whangarei. They pleaded not guilty to all charges through Mr J. D. Golightly. Evidence was given that the three men had played a practical joke on four Maoris by leading them to believe that a woman had been thrown into the river on the night of May 24. The Maoris reported the incident to the police, who made a search. The three accused were found guilty
of disorderly behaviour, and were each fined £2, with costs. Mr Golightly said the men realised now how foolish they had been, and they apologised.
