TENDERS HAVE BEEN CALLED FOR BUILDING THE FIRST PART OF THE NEW ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL, WELLINGTON, the foundation stone of which was laid by the Queen on January 13, 1954. LEFT: An impression of the projected Cathedral to be built on rising ground near Parliament Buildings. The original plans were prepared by Mr Cecil Wood, of Christchurch, but after his death in 1947 Mr Robert C. Munro, also of Christchurch, was appointed the architect. The part of the Cathedral to be built first will be the liturgical east end down to the first two bays of the great nave. RIGHT: A drawing of the lady chapel, which will open off the north ambulatory. All that is best and most loved in the existing 90-year-old wooden pro-Cathedral will be incorporated in the chapel and will be preserved in a concrete shell in keeping with the design of the new Cathedral.
