Australian Entries Decrease
RISING FAST AGAIN IN BOTH EVENTS

Victorian entries for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups showed a slight falling off when nominations for both races closed today. However, with Inter-State and New Zealand entries to come, the total nominations for the big spring double should be on a par with last year Local entries for the Melbourne Cup totalled 234, 18 less than last year, and 60 less than the record in 1948. In that year the total entry was 541. Last year the total was 480.
In the Caulfield Cup there were 212 Victorian entries, 23 less than last year. The record entry for the Caulfield Cup was 469 in 1952. Last year the total was 438.
Among horses nominated for both races are Rising Fast, which won the Cups double in 1954 with 8-10 and 9-5 respectively, and last year won the Caulfield Cup with 9-10 and was second in the Melbourne Cup with 10-0. Sailor’s Guide. Australia’s outstanding three-year-old, which won the Sydney Cup, the two St Legers, and the V.R.C. Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the autumn. Adelaide and Australian Cup’s winner Pushover. Wodalla, Melbourne Cup winner in 1953. Cup specialist. Hellion, which won the Australian and Sandown Cups last year.
