Many Riccarton Representatives

FIVE NOMINATED FOR CAULFIELD CUP

Ray Ribbon will be Riccarton’s lone representative, but a worthy one, in the Melbourne Cup this year. He has also been nominated for the Williamstown Cup, a race he won last year, and other important races in Victoria and New South Wales.

Entries for those races closed yesterday with the secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Mr F. T. H. Bell. Ray Ribbon is one of five horses nominated locally for the Caulfield Cup. The others are Lochie and Ma Reine, both owned by Mr D. McFarlane and trained at Wingatui by A. E. Didham; Fulgent, owned by Mrs C. C. McCarthy, wife of the Riccarton trainer; and Mr O. F. Watson’s three-year-old Mananui. Mananui is a half-brother to My Here, which won the Caulfield Cup for Mr Watson three years ago.

Mananui is still a maiden, but has not been extensively raced, and has been placed.

Innesfell, also owned by Mr Watson and trained by G. H. Murffitt, jun.. at Riccarton. has been nominated for the Caulfield Guineas and One Thousand Guineas. She won stylishly at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, and had little luck in her two races at Ashburton. The nominations are:— Melbourne Cup: Ray Ribbon. Williamstown Cup: Ray Ribbon. entered for the Melbourne Cup, the Caulfield Cup, the Williamstown Cup. and the Moonee Valley Cup. All Fair has been nominated for the Maribyrnong Plate and the Ascot Vale Stakes.

All Fair was purchased by Mr Barton at the last Trentham yearling sales for 1750 guineas. A chestnut colt by Fair’s Fair, he was offered by Mr W. R. Stead, of the Sasanof Stud. Hastings. This colt has an Australian background on his distaff side. His maternal granddam. Virginia Waters, was bred across the Tasman and was imported to the Dominion by Sir James and Mr J C. Fletcher for their Alton Lodge Stud. Verginal. the dam of Virginia Waters, was a half-sister to the famous mare. Simper, the dam of winners of £32.618.

Ark Royal will not race in New Zealand before he leaves for Sydney next month, but Nuclear and Persia, which will also accompany the team, will race at Trentham as part of their preparation.

BAYLONA DIES WHILE TRAINING (New Zeaiana Press Association) TE AWAMUTU, June 12. Baylona. an acceptor in the W. G. Park Steeplechase at the Waipa Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday, dropped dead on the Te Awamutu racecourse this morning. He schooled brilliantly and was just stretching out for a gallop when he collapsed and dropped dead. This now leaves six in the main jumping event of the day. Baylona was owned by the successful Matangi sportsman. Mr Ivan Robinson, who also trained him.

MATERIAL FOR FENCES AT RICCARTON

Seven employees of the Canterbury Jockey Club are in the Kaikoura district this week cutting scrub for the brush fences on the steeplechase course at Riccarton. Several tons of material will be required. Usually, five tons go into the famous Cutts’a.
