WATERING SYSTEM FOR GROUNDS
Linwood High School Application
By the end of this year trees to the value of about £3OO will have been planted in the grounds at Linwood High School, where there are already vast areas of grass-sown playing fields and many flower beds. When the school board of governors met last evening, the headmaster (Mr B. H. Wakelin) asked the board to apply to the Education Department for a grant of £225 10s to cover the cost of installing a pressure pump, motor, three sprinklers with rollers, hose and water pipes. He recommended that the system be put in during the winter months so that it would be ready for operation by the summer. The board agreed to make application for the grant. An artesian bore in the middle of the quadrangle had been piped to some parts of the grounds in 1954, said Mr Wakelin. Parts of the grounds since developed were not served by the system. The well provided a good flow of water, but the pressure was very low and quite insufficient to operate even the smallest sprinkler. “During the summer we used this water continuously for the grounds, but the coverage was inadequate and had to be supplemented from the city water supply for which we pay Is for 1000 gallons,” he said. “We would require an enormous length of hose to take water to all parts of the grounds.” Mr Wakelin said he had consulted a Ministry of Works engineer who recommended that a pressure pump be installed in the system. The engineer recommended that the system be extended to serve all parts of the grounds and that some high pressure sprinklers be procured which would each cover an area of 100 ft in diameter.
A firm well experienced in this type of work had given a quote of £225 10s for the installation of the system, Mr Wakelin said.
