Title Contender Injures Hand

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, June 11. The young American boxer, Floyd Patterson, fancied as the next world heavyweight champion, broke a bone in his right hand winning fest night’s elimination fight against Tommy (Hurricane) Jackson at Madison Square Garden. He beat his heavier opponent to win a points decision over 12 rounds. It was a big step towards the heavyweight title (vacant since Rocky Marciano retired) for Patterson However the broken bone and the fact that last mght’s win was on a split decision raised doubts about a September match for the title with Archie Moore, the world light-heavyweight champion. Both judges voted for Patterson by a solid margin, but the referee, Harry Kessler, favoured Jackson. The biggest Madison Garden crowd for years yelled its approval of the judges’ votes.
