Strange Submarine Off Nova Scotia

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright-)

(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) HALIFAX, June 11. Ships and aircraft searched an area 130 miles south of the Nova Scotia coast today after a possible submarine contact by a Royal Canadian Air Force Neptune patrol plane. A Navy spokesman said a submarine was not actually sighted. He said contact was made with detection equipment, and reports that the craft was a . Russian submarine were “only speculation.”

The aircraft-carrier Magnificent and the destroyer escort Huron were sent to the scene.

The Navy said no United States or British submarines were operating in the area. A naval spokesman at Ottawa said even if the ship was a Russian submarine it had a perfect right to be there.
