SALVATION ARMY PROJECT
EMERGENCY LODGE FOR HOMELESS
HOUSE ACQUIRED IN BEALEY AVENUE
The Salvation Army has taken over a two-storey house at 209 Bealey avenue for use as an emergency lodge for women and children without a home because of eviction, fire, flood and domestic disaster or who have been remanded in Court and have no fixed abode.
Fully furnished, the lodge is expected,, to cost between £7500 and £BOOO. Towards that cost a Government grant of £4OOO is expected, leaving between £3500 and £4OOO to be found.
Accommodation will be available for between eight to 10 people in addition to the officer-in-charge and an assistant.
Major Jean Bennett, Samaritan officer, a familiar figure in Christchurch Courts, will be in charge of the home.
Similar institutions are now conducted by the Salvation Army in Auckland and Dunedin and one is also in course of establishment in Wellington.
The project woujd be of value to the whole city, said Senior Major G. H. Sawyer, of 32 Champion street, yesterday. He said that donations could be sent to Post Office Box 887 or offered through telephone 76-706.
