BUILDING JOB DISPUTE
BAN ON CARTAGE SUSPENDED
A ban on the cartage of materials for projects of the W. Williamson Construction Company, Ltd., has been lifted pending the decision of a committee of arbitration which will meet in Wellington next Tuesday. The ban was imposed by a number of unions throughout the country after a labour dispute at the Auckland Civic Centre job being done by the Christchurch company.
A former general manager of the Railways Department, Mr H. C. Lusty, has been appointed chairman of the committee, and the company will be represented by Messrs W. R. Carey and R. P. Thompson, of Christchurch. Messrs J. Freeman and A. Ross, officials of Auckland trade unions, are likely to be the workers’ representatives.
Mr Thompson said yesterday that Mr Williamson had not insisted that June 19 should be the date of the committee’s meeting, as Mr F. P. Walsh, president of the Federation of Labour, had claimed. The company had agreed to a date suitable to union interests.
