TARIFF EXEMPTIONS SOUGHT
MOVE BY N.Z. LIBRARY ASSOCIATION (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 6. The part played by public libraries in providing material for further education was such that they should, for the present purpose, be regarded as in the same category as schools, colleges, and universities, said the Wellington City Librarian (Mr C. S. Perry) to the Board of Trade today. He was presenting submissions on behalf of the New Zealand Library Association in a general tariff hearing of the board. Mr Perry’s submission was that item 416 of the Customs tariff should be so defined as to include public libraries specifically within its terms of reference. The material to which the exemption would be applicable included certain types of library equipment such as microfilm and microcard readers, cameras, film projectors, and gramophone records, said Mr Perry. Such apparatus for public libraries, he submitted, was used in a genuine extension of formal education and should therefore be exempt from duty.
