CYPRUS
Sir, —“J S.” is so positive that “the overwhelming majority of Cypriots desire union with Greece’’ that it is to be wondered why others have not discovered this “hard fact.” Sir Richard Palmer, former Governor of Cyprus, recently wrote: “In Cyprus, a discordant minority will, if untrammelled. succeed in terrorising or misleading the majority. Our own press and Labour Party are mainly responsible for the continuance of unrest in Cyprus.” Of course, the British press is not as violently antiBritish on colonial issues as it was; too many strange rumours have been emanating from British colonies which have gained their “freedom.” Just think of Bombay. Ceylon, and the Sudan. Besides.- the same pattern of events which has preceded every instance of “self-determination,” is being so faithfully reproduced in Cyprus, and the events are moving so near home, that even the most complacent Briton is cocking the jaundiced eye.—Yours, etc., J. HARTLEY. June 6. 1956.
