Williamson, managing director of the W. Williamson Construction Company. Ltd., of Christchurch, met the president of the Federation of Labour ‘Mr F. P. Walsh) at a compulsory conference in Wellington. The parties had been called together by the Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan) under the terms nf the Industrial Relations Act. They spent most of the day discussing the matters in dispute in the absence of the chairman (Mr B. L. Dal la rd), who had been appointed by the Minister. Mr Dallard commented tonight: “This case exemplifies the virtues nf Section 8 of the Industrial Relations Act. which gives the Minister power to call a conference when neither of the parties has agreed to meet. When they got together todav. thev were able to resolve a lot of their difficulties. and this has paved the way. it is hoped, to a satisfactory settlement.”
