EQUIPMENT FOR RAILWAYS

MR MCALPINE TO VISIT CANBERRA

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 5.

To investigate the ability of Australian industry to meet various New Zealand railways requirements under the two countries’ reciprocal trade agreement, the Minister of Railways (Mr J. K. McAlpine) will visit Canberra next week.

Announcing this today, the ActingPrime Minister (Mr K. J. Holyoake) said that railways development policy necessitated imports which it was felt Australian heavy industry might be able to supply to mutual advantage. The trade agreement had been negotiated at Government level, said Mr Holyoake. and accordingly the Cabinet felt it was desirable that Mr McAlpine should go to Australia for discussions with the appropriate Commonwealth Ministers.

Mr McAlpine will leave Christchurch by air for Sydney on Monday, and expects to be away about 10 days. With him will be the General Manager of Railways (Mr A. T. Gandell).
