OLYMPIC GAMES FENCERS
NEW ZEALAND SELECTORS ANNOUNCED
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 5.
The New Zealand Amateur Fencing Association, in addition tb endeavouring to send a team to the Olympic Games, is exploring the possibility of getting one of the top European teams to tour after the games. The side the association is most interested in is the Hungarians, who have developed a new and startlingly successful technique with the foil and epee. The Olympic fencing panel has been named, and it will consist of Messrs W. M. Dawn (Auckland), chairman, M. B. Gittos (Otago), A. McLeavey (Auckland). J. Stafford (Wellington), and W. S. Elsom (Canterbury). After elimination contests in the various centres, the best of New Zealand’s fencers will appear in Wellington on September 1 and 2 before the selection panel
Mr Dawn said tonight that New Zealand representatives should have some facility with the sabre and epee in addition to the more common foil Women fencers were required to us° only the foil.
After the team has been chosen it >s probable that it will have a fortnight’s intensive training before leaving for Melbourne.
