TEXAS TOURNAMENT MIDDLECOFF AND LITTLER BEATEN IN PLAY-OFF (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) DALLAS, June 4. Peter Thomson, of Melbourne, won a play-off and first money of 14,000 dollar* in the Texas international open golf tournament today. Thomson beat Cary Middlecoff and Gene Littler after the three had tied at 267 for 72 holes. Thomson won the championship on the second hole of the play-off. He sank a 12ft birdie while Littler missed a 7ft putt that would have kept him in a tie with Thomson. Middlecoff threw away hi* chances by hitting a tree with his second. Thomson came from a tie for eighth to equal first by scoring 63 in the final round for 267 for the 72 holes. Littler, the leader at 54 holes with 197. had a closing round of 70, missing a 4ft putt on the eighteenth green that would have given him the championship. Middlecoff had a 68. Thomson said it was his fourth 63 m America and one of the best rounds he had ever played- He had nine single-putt greens and only 27 putts in the entire round. He finished with five birdies andan eagle, the latter with a 15ft putt on the twelfth. Thomson’s was the second 63 today. Bill Nary, of Wayne, Michigan, also scored 63. Both tied the course record over the 6216-yard Preston Hollow Country Club course set by Bob Inman, of Detroit, in last week’s Dallas centennial open championship. Thomson’s 267 was mad* up of round scores of 67, 69. 68. 63. Littler scored 64, 66, 67, 70, and Middlecoff 64. 67. 68, 68.
