RISE OF LIBERAL PARTY IN N.Z.
HISTORY OF 1880-90 PERIOD
The history of the Liberal movement in New Zealand from the situation of collapse in which it found itself in 1880 to its triumph in the election of 1890, is described in a bulletin in the Auckland University College history series. Entitled “The Rise of the New Zealand Liberal Party, 1880-90,’’ the 42-page pamphlet is written by Mr T. G. Wilson, junior lecturer in history at the college. Mr Wilson says: “To an extent not found perhaps in any other period of New Zealand politics, the Liberal Party in these formative years was guided by a group of theoretical radicals When the upheaval of 1890 took place, it found its natural leaders among these men who had kept alive the Liberal tradition and the policy of protest at a time when it appeared to pay few dividends.’’-
