REDCRAZE WINS BRISBANE CUP

The New Zealand stayer, Redcraze, with L h 1 '}. 1 !!?! 1 !. ™ n from the half-mile, won the £12.000 Brisbane Cup over two miles at Eagle Farm, Brisbane, today. Ridden by the Sydney jockey. A. Ward. Redcraze won by a long neck from Caranna, with Beaupa two lengths away third, in 3mm sec °nds and a quarter outside the Eagle Farm and race record. Redcraze will spend the rest of the winter in Brisbane and then move south for his main target, the 1956 Melbourne Cup After winning the P. J. O'Shea Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday, Redcraze developed stitch, and had to have veterinary attention yesterday. He recovered so well that his trainer. T. J. Smith, said this morning; "Whatever beats him will win.’’ Ward rode Redcraze to a well-thought-out plan. He held him up in the early stages and hoped the pace would be fast It was, and Ward went for a feeler half a mile from home. Redcraze was ready and tackled the leaders brilliantly in the straight. Of . other New Zealand starters. Cambridge had every chance and finished fifth. He was racing in the middle of the field most of the way. but failed because he could not stay Deceptive fell right away over the final stages and finished last.
