WANGANUI CLUB

PONTOON WINS MAIN RACE ROBINSON DESTROYED AFTER FALL (New Zealana Press Association) WANGANUI, June 4. Five horses well when 100 yards from the winning post in the Russell Grace Handicap, the principal event on the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting today. The horses involved were Shannon's Way. Havoc. Pirate, Nile Valley, and Robinson. The last-named received injuries which necessitated his destruction. The meeting ended before a big attendance in changeable weather, sunshine alternating with showers. The totalisator on-course handled £69,641, compared with £71,763 last year. The total for the meeting was £132,808, compared with £127,920. an increase of £4988. The winning double. Pontoon and Rutillant. paid £658 4s for £l. An inquiry was held after the last race, in which Anticipate finished first and Saunter second. After hearing the evidence of the respective riders, W. L. Aitken and B. Jones, and of the stipendiary steward, and from its own observations, the committee decided that interference took place, and affected Saunter’s chances. The committee reversed the first and second placings. They found Aitken guilty of careless riding and suspended him up to and including June 30, 1956.

After the Russell Grace Handicap, the judicial committee, after hearing the evidence of V. J. Sellars (Papiro), who was close to Shannon’s Way, the first horse to fall, found that the falls were accidental. Results:—
