AUCKLAND CLUB

Great Northern Steeplechase

EASY WIN FOR HIT PARADE

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. June 4. Hit Parade had a great triumph over the Ellerslie course today. Two days before he won the Great Northern Hurdles and today the Great Northern Steeplechase. The double win has been recorded once before in the last 32 years—by Sir Rosebery in 1925. All the honours were with Hit Parade, because he was the pacemaker, and gave the others upward of 101 b in weight in ground which could not have been heavier. Wattie, the second horse, carried 9-12, and Wotan’s Gold, third, was a light-weight chance with 9-2. Wotan’s Gold, which was ridden by J. W. Harris, attended Hit Parade for the best part of the gruelling four-mile race, and fell away tired and beaten when beginning the run home.

Hit Parade is the third eight-year-old to win the Great Northern Steeplechase since the distance was increased to four miles in 1947. The others were Golden Reign and Dunwold. The fastest gallop was Bmin 6sec, by Brookby Song in 1947 and Hit Parade’s Bmin 44 2-ssec is by far the slowest.

T* l ® Great Northern Steeplechase was the first leg of the double. There wa< a big surprise in the second leg, the King George Handicap, when the Ellers.ie nlly, Estimate, won.
