SECOND DAY AT ASHBURTON

GOLDEN HERO SHOULD RACE WELL

KILCULLEN FAVOURED IN FIRST LEG

Golden Hero, which will be bracketed with Scottish Command, may be .avourite for the Mew Zealand Saping Stakes, the main race on the second day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting today. Golden Hero won the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes at his last start, and has .rained on well in the meantime.

Shantung, runner-up to Golden Hero at Oamaru, may be the hardest to oeat. She should not be troubled to run out a solid mile and a half. Bon Ten has not been at his best ateiy, and is unlit ely to start. If produced he will be in demand, but lack of recent work may tell against him in a solidly-run race.

If Ben Ton is withdrawn, as seemed possible yesterday, M. Holmes's brae et of Arnhem and Finestra, both of which have been winners, will enter salculations. Arnhem may stay more strongly than his stablemate. Overdrive and Jchnny Guitar make most appeal of the others. Kilcullen. winner of the Rakaia Handicap on Saturday, will be one of the favourites for the first leg cf the double, the Ashburton County Handicap. He is handily placed on the tront, end will no doubt attempt to ead all the way. Ricochet, one of the best-performed three-year-olds of the season. Arriba, an unlucky runner on Saturday, Lady Cook. Young Sam. and Parable are other prospects in an open race. Ccmpo Jack stands out in the second leg. the two-mile Acton Handicap -ompo Jack won the Kurow Cup bv a decisive margin recently, and he ,S Gold Deoro - Zagar, Glenalmar. and Dinnie Daley may also race well Gold Direct, runner-up to Kilcullen n a similar race on Saturday. looks '•ne of the brightest prospects at the meeting in the Winter Handicap. She has had a win and two placings in ler last three starts, and is due foi another win.

Corinthian, a newcomer to this class Dresden Lady. Royal Leaf, Aldora, and Jonnnv Gilbert are others expected to be solidly supported. Weather prospects for today are not but if there is no heavy rain -his morning, the track should be in ;ood winter order.
