MINOR EVENTS AT ASHBURTON

WILTON LAD HAS GOOD WIN Wilton Lad won his third successive race when he beat another Southland trotter. Fogbound, in the Stewards’ Handicao at Ashburton on Saturday. Wilton Lad began splendidly from 24 yards, and he was handily placed two lengths behind the pacemaker. Assure, which broke with about three furlongs to run. Kaboon was left in T-ont racing to the straight, and was Uear of Wilton Lad at the furlong post, where Quite Contrary. Gay Tune. Fogbound and Scott’s Own were all handy. Wilton Lad soon took the measure of Kaboon, and held off a strong bid by Fogbound by a length and a half.

Fogbound trotted a fine race from 48 yards. He had to cover extra ground to work into a handy position near the straight entrance. He ran on solidly. Kaboon tired over the final furlong and was beaten off in third place, two lengths in front of Gay Tune, which was finishing on. Scott’s Own showed speed to finish fifth, a length back, ahead of Quite Contrary. Victory Cheer. See All. Beehive and Rapuwai, which broke badly at the start. Kilty Lad broke several times and tailed the field. Serenelli. Jaquine Sandy’s Gift, and Sword Lass were others to make mistakes. Corinthian in Form Corinthian made amends for an unlucky run in his race at Addington the previous Saturday when he beat Final Glow by a neck in the second leg of the double, the Harvest Handicap. Brooklyn Star made all the pace, and led into the last furlong by two lengths from Glenalmar. Gold Moana, Spiral, and Corinthian, with Final Glow making up ground. Corinthian, which was always handily placed, iought on strongly to catch the tiring Brooklyn Star and win well by a neck. Final Glow, which moved up smartly in the middle stages of the race, ran on well over the last furlong and was doing as well as the winner at the finish. Brooklyn Star looked the likely winner with half a furlong to go. but came to the end of his run short of the post. He was a length and a half behind Final Glow, with a nose to Glenalmar, which trailed Brooklyn Star for most of the race. Gold Moana, which tangled near the mile post, was a useful fifth, a length in front of Sister Shona, with gaps to Scottish Choice and Dinnie Daley. Gold Deoro Surprises Gold Deoro caused a minor upset when he beat Banquier in the Autumn Handicap, a race for probationary drivers. Gold Deoro was one of the early leaders, but in the middle stages of the race he was trailing. Auburn’s Best and Jungle Sone led from the six-furlong post, Auburn’s Best breaking at the straight entrance. Lord Kinnola had a run through on the inner approaching the final furlong, where he was three lengths in front of Gold Deoro, with Jungle Seng, Springvale, and Banquier all handy.

In a good finish. Gold Deoro finished strongly to hold off Banquier, which made his way through the field after losing a lot cf ground at the start, by half a neck.

Catamaran, which was well back eariy. mace up ground for third, a short length from Banquier, with a neck to Black Gem, half a length to Jungle Song, and a neck to Springvale. Lord Kinnola was right up next, ahead of Flaroma and Farewell. Next Time, the favourite, collided with Banquier after breaking at the start, and was never a possibility. Easy Win for Showdown Showdown, an odds-on favourite, confirmed the high opinion held of him when he won the improvers’ Handicap. He broke badly at the start and was at least 69 yards from the pacemaker, Nikova, at the end of a furlong. M. Holmes gradually moved him up until he was about seventh racing to the straight. He continued his run wide out, and at the furlong was shading Wainoni Loyal, Gregory and Alert, with the others dropping out. Showdown coasted over the final furlong, and won witn a lot in Wainoni Loyal paced her best race to date to take second place. She was never far from the leaders, and ran on well without threatening the winner. Alert, which was handily placed on the rails about three lengths from the leader throughout the running, finis'* ed on for third, three lengths ahead of Gregory Grattan, with eight lengths to Dale Forest, which shaded Fontenoy. Nikova and Victorv Lee were beaten off at t.ie head of a tired lot. Rry Derby and Skj leada broke at the start, and Postillion and Delaforce collided at the end of almost three furlongs. Smart Trotter

Nirvana, a half-brother by Indianapolis to Dictation, trotted very well to win the Allenton Handicap. He worked his way into the lead at the end of a furlong and set a sound pace. He was joined

by Kilmartin in the middle stages of the race, but was clear again at the straight entrance. He approached the final furlong more than a length ahead of With You. Shiann. Gentle Anna, Karingal, and Supervise. Nirvana won with something in hand by two lengths and a half.

With You was on the rails well back in the field most of the way. He sprinted about the furlong post and looked likely to trouble the winner. However, he soon came to the end of his run, holding on for second, a length in front of Gontie Arna. She had a good run just behind Nirvana all the way and battled on to shade Shiann by a head, with a length to Supervise, which had every chance. Karingal trotted a useful race for sixth, but he was five lengths from Supervise, with gaps to Unlikely, Kilmartin, ana Sandfly. ”1
