FOREST RESEARCH WORKERS

EXCHANGE BY N.Z. AND AUSTRALIA (New Zeaiana Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 7. New Zealand and Australia are'to exchange forest research workers for short periods. Arrangements for the exchange were concluded by the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) and the Australian Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) during Mr Holland’s visit to Australia. Mr Holland said that both countries were deriving increased advantage from the use of exotic pine plantations. New Zealand timber production from exotics was now greater than from native timbers, and it would be accelerated. It was apparent that the research involved in the large - scale introduction of exotic trees had developed along different lines in the two countries, and each could gain from an exchange of information and experience. Australia had acknowledged the assistance she had received from officers of the New Zealand Forest Service in the recent inquiry there into the appearance of the sirex insect. There were also fields in which Australian experience could possibly be of help in New Zealand. It had therefore been agreed that facilities be provided for an exchange of forestry research personnel. and arrangements were now being made for this, said Mr Holland.
