BICYCLE BAN
New Edict In Nicosia
(Rec. 9 p.m.) NICOSIA. March 6. Bicycles were banned in Nicosia tonight and local Britons said it was like London without her familiar red buses. The Government has banned bicycles and motor-cycles in Nicosia and its suburbs from sunset to sunrise until further notice. The ban follows several recent instances when terrorists on bicycles lobbed grenades into British-occupied homes in Nicosia and sped away. About 100,000 people live in the area. Their 30.000 bicydes are a familiar traffic pest and a favourite form of transport for both sexes. There was a last minute flurry on the streets tonight as cyclists pedalled hard to get home before the ban went into force at 6.30 local time. British troops in jeeps and patrol cars then began to patrol the suddenly empty streets. A similar ban in Limassol and Famagusta has been in force for several weeks.
