U.S. Firms Lay Off Workers

(Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 6. The Studebaker Company yesterday laid off 1000 workers and the Chrysler Corporation postponed the recall of 5400 men who had not worked since February 13, the “Wall Street Journal” reported today. But the Packard Company recalled 5500 workers who were laid off on February 2. The Studebaker lay-offs mean a cut in production for the domestic market of just under 20 per cent. The Chrysler Corporation said the recall of its workers would now depend on continued improvement of Plymouth car sales.

Counsellors of State. —The Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, the Duke of Gloucester, the Princess Royal, and the Earl of Harewood will be Counsellors of State during the Mediterranean cruise next week of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.—London. March 7.
