BOY WINS £1 FOR FISH 7|IN LONG "The , Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, January 6. A sprat 72in long won for Ross Tebbs, aged 10, Murray’s Bay, £1 and a championship certificate signed by the Mayor of the East Coast Bays (Mr R. H. Greville), The sprat was the largest caught at Murray’s Bay by more than 100 girls and boys whd vied for the “First Annual Whopper Sprat-Catching Championship of the East Coast Bays.” The smallest was 44 in long, and earned 5s for Michael Finlay, aged eight, of Murray’s Bay. No girl won anything. One fish even larger than the winner was raised, after a herculean struggle, to the wharf. But while the j,udge was pulling out his xuler this "monster” flipped through a gap in the planks of the wharf. After an hour the children went home. Lines were tangled, the tide had turned, and the fish were gorged and somnolent on a rich diet of mouldy bread, pipis. beef and dough.
