E. ELWOOD LOSES BOTH GAMES

In the fours of the national bowling championships today, E. Elwood (Christchurch Returned Services’ Association) was beaten in both his matches. . . ,

Elwood won the Christchurch centre’s Christmas fours last season, and was the winning skip in the 1950 national pairs.

The Alexandra rink, skipped by W. H. Russell, beat the Christchurch rink, 25-15, in the morning. Later. Elwood was beaten by H. C* Walker (Kurow), 29-19.

S. J. Snedden’s Linwood four played two close games for a win and a loss. The first game resulted in a 22-20 victory against J. Kitto (Ohai). and the second in a 21-23 defeat by J. H. McKellar (Alexandra). Snedden was a member of the Linwood four which won the national title at Dunedin in 1938. Included in his four today was H. Deavoll, winner of the Christchurch champion-of-champions competition last year, and a former Canterbury Rugby representative.

A former Dunedin player. D. Vaughan, had mixed fortunes and his Opawa four won one game and lost the other. While a resident of Dunedin, Vaughan won the centre fours champion-of-champions competition four times. Ashburton Competitors

Ashburton rinks, skipped by A. C. Argyle and a 1914 All Black, E. A. Cockroft. each had a win and a loss. Cockroft’s four gained a commanding lead in both games, but the advantage was not maintained. Cockroft had a 27-23 win over Luke (Caversham), and lost, 20-25, to Gribble (Mount Eden).

Argyle lost his first game to Bills (Leith), 21-18. and in the second game, beat a strong Balmoral rink skipped by R. T. Hawthorne. Another upset of the morning was the defeat of the Westport R.S.A. four, skipped bv C. Spearman, who’lost to J. W. Walls's Kaituna rink. Spearman has four national titles to his credit, including two singles championships. He lost his first game today, 24-19. Spearman's four settled down in the afternoon, however, and beat J. F. Milligan (Riversdale), 31-20.

A Beckenham rink skipped by E. N. Bromley, lost to T. T. Skoglund (Carlton). 32-6, in the afternoon.
