MANAGEMENT TRAINING

IMPORTANCE INCREASING “It is abundantly clear that recruitment and training for leadership in industry and commerce is a matter of increasing importance if we are to keep pace with the tempo of the modern world,” says the president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Institute of Management (Mr J. L. Hay) in his annual report. “The older countries have, in recent years, recognised in increasing measure the necessity 'of providing facilities—even up to university level—for training in business administration, and it is encouraging to see an awareness of this now developing in New Zealand,” says Mr Hay. “The challenging addresses at the recent top management conference held in Christchurch bear witness of this need. As yet, the New Zealand institute has touched only the fringe of a vast problem, but at least a beginning has been made, and foundations have been laid on which the business interests of this country can, if they are wise, build something of lasting value to the economy and well-being of the country.”

During the year, there was an increase of 37 in the membership of the branch, which now comprises three fellow, eight associate fellow, 57 associates, 135 affiliates and 37 student members. Thirteen new company members were recruited during the year, bringing the present company membtr strength to 33.

Entrants for the institute’s courses numbered 247, and examination entries have been received for 117 papers. The institute’s complete course on “Business General Management” has been conducted for the first time this year at the Christchurch Technical College.
