EMERGENCY IN KENYA
REPORT TO COMMONS ON IMPROVEMENT
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, October 26. A “continued improvement” in the emergency situation in Kenya was reported to the House of Commons today by the Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr Alan Lennox-Boyd). He also reported “encouraging progress” in tackling the problem of rehabilitation and resettlement. “Meanwhile,” he added, “schemes for economic and social development in the non-Mau Mau area are going forward with all possible speed.” From Nairobi it was reported today that seven members of a 16-strong Mau Mau gang were killed in the Chieni Forest, near Nveri, where a 63-year-old Kenya farmer was buried alive as a human sacrifice a year ago. Police, Home Guards, and civilians tracked the gang through the forest and captured five Mau Mau in addition to those killed. In another operation, a tracker team accounted for three terrorists hiding in a wheatfield in the Gilgil area, after they had been spotted by police aircraft.
