RUGBY LEAGUE

ST. HELENS BEATS N.Z., 16-8 SPECTACULAR BACK MOVEMENTS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 26. Fourteen thousand spectators who defied the rain were rewarded with an interesting game when St. Helens beat the touring New Zealand Rugby League team, 16-8, after leading 9-0 at half-time. Though New Zealand lost, their players contributed generously to the spectacular movements of the match, and with more luck they might have done considerably better. McKay, the three-quarter, playing at full-back, was very sound. Baxter and Sorenson were hard-working centres, and Bakalich was a brilliant winger. The outstanding half-back was Menzies, who was always difficult to hold. Of the forwards, Atkinson, Percy, and Kilkelly were the most skilful in the open play. The prop forward, McLellan, made good use of his bulk to contribute one of the tries. Atkinson got the other, one of the best of the match, just after halftime, after first-class approach- work by Sorenson and Menzies. In the first half, St. Helens was well on top, after early New Zealand attacks, Llewellyn, Howard, and Robinson scored a try each. In the second half, Parsons kicked two goals for St. Helens, and the full-back, Moses, scored a great try. The most skilful forward on the field was probably Max Garbler, the Australian, who came, to St. Helens without any sort of reputation, and who has suddenly blossomed into a brilliant player. It was a. clean, sporting, enjoyable game. All the three goal kicks taken by Parsons were wide. The teams were:—

St. Helens.—Moses, Llewellyn, Greenall, Senior, Charlton, Howard, Dickinson, Prescott. McCabe, Terry, Parsons, Robinson, and Garbler.

New Zealand.—McKay, Bakalich, Baxter, Sorenson. McNicol, Menzies, Creedy, McLennan, Kilkelly. Butterfield, Macdonald, Percy, Atkinson.
