SOMERSET FAIR OUT OF CUP
FUTURE PROGRAMME NOT DECIDED
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, October 20. The New Zealand champion, Somerset Fair, will not start in the Melbourne Cup. The trainer, Jack Bagby, said the norse was recovering from his injured hooves, but to run him in the Melbourne Cup might finish bim for all time. Bagby said that Somerset Fair would also be scratched from the Mackinnon Stakes (10 furlongs) and the Hotham Handicap (ofte mile and a half, weight for age) at Flemington on Saturday Somerset Fair will have his first Melbourne start in the Linlithgow Stakes (one . mile, weight for age) at Flemington two days later. If the horse goes well, he will run in the Fisher Plate (one mile and a half, weight for age) on the last day of the Melbourne Cup carnival. Bagby said that Somerset Fair would only have to show something like his real form to be a certain starter in the Williamstown Cup (one mile and a half) the next Saturday. The part-owner, Mr B. A. Millen, has not yet decided whether Somerset Fair will stay in Australia or be returned to New Zealand next month. Mr Millen said that It depended on how the horse progressed during the next 10 days. Somerset Fair has been booked to go back to New Zealand in the Wanganella, which is due to leave Sydney on November 10. Mr Millen said the booking still stood, but he had discussed with several trainers what prospects Somerset Fair would have in Australia. ‘‘l am only a part-owner and will have to consult my partner before I make any changes of plans for Somerset Fair,’’ said Mr Millen.
RISING FAST TO MEET CARANNA
OWNER CONFIDENT OF fWIN IN COX PLATE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, October 20.
Rising Fast’s owner, Mr L. R. Spring, is confident that his horse can beat the champion Sydney three-year-old Caranna in Saturday's W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. Mr Spring has not seen Caranna race, but he said that the colt would have to be something right out of the box to beat Rising Fast in his present form. •'This time last year they were telling me about two very good three-year-olds from Sydney which were likely to beat Rising Fast in this same race,” said Mr Spring. “They were Prince Delville, which won the A.J.C. Derby, and Pride of Egypt, which later won the Victoria Derby, but Rising Fast beat the two of them easily’’ Caranna, as the result of a sensational gallop at Moonee Valley on Tuesday, looks like challenging Rising Fast for the favouritism on Saturday. Bookmakers still cannot agree which one will open favourite. Rising Fast will carry 9-4, and Caranna 7-11.
