TRACK WORK AT TRENTHAM

TAKATU IMPRESSIVE IN MILE GALLOP FAST SPRINT BY ROYAL APPLAUSE “The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, October 20. Takatu did an impressive trial this morning for the Watkins Handicap, first leg of the double on the second day of the Wellington spring meeting, when he covered a mile with Scuppered. Master Proven also did well over a mile. He also is in the Watkins Handicap. The best sprint was done by the hack. Zariba, and another good effort over half a mile was that of Royal Applause. Over five furlongs Siphon, Assembly, Select, and Royal Zorra created a good impression.

Galloping was held on the outside of the course proper, which provided good going in spite of overnight rain. The best time for a mile was recorded by Takatu (Hooton) and Scuppered Stokes), which recorded Imin 49sec, galloping very keenly. Takatu was the early leader, but Scuppered made up the leeway gradually and was shading her companion at the)finish. They were eased over the final half-mile in 54 l-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 41sec. Takatu pleased by the manner in which he completed his trial. It was unfortunate that Scuppered was eliminated from the Watkins Handicap, as there is not suitable race for her on the final day of the meeting. Working first, Zariba (Smith) sprinted half a mile in 51sec, the final three furlongs taking 37 2-ssec. He has brilliant speed, but does not always run out his races solidly.

Royal Applause (Eastwood) was responsible for a good trial when he galloped half a mile in 51 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 37 4-ssec. Her effort was the more creditable, as she worked when the track had cut out slightly. Royal Applause, a previous winner at Trentham, is in the Awatea Handicap this week. Syntax (McFarlane) was half a length ahead of Master Proven (Medcalfe), with Gulliver two lengths away, at the end of a working gallop over a mile. The last half was run in 53 l-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Syntax and Gulliver are entered for the Harcourt Stakes on the final day of the meeting. Siphon (Nagel) and Assembly (Low) did well when they completed five furlongs together In Imin 6 4-ssec, the last four in 52 3-ssec, and the final three in 39 2-ssec. Siphon was going slightly better at the end. He made a prominent showing to the final furlong in the Wainui Handicap last week. Finishing strongly, Select (Perawiti) was a length and a half ahead of Champion (McFarlane) after running five furlongs in Imin 7sec. Stakes Prospect

Royal Zorra (De Silva) enhanced her prospects for the Desert Gold Stakes when she ran five furlongs with Indian Mars (Mudford) in Imin 6 .4-ssec. They came from the half mile in 52 3-ssec, and from the three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. Indian Mars did exceptionally well for a maiden. Va Vite (McFarlane) completed pace work by striding easily from the half-mile in 52 2-ssec, the fnal three furlongs taking 39 l-ssec. Va Vite has taken no harm from his successful outing on the first day, and, as he will be better suited by the distance of the Heretaunga Hack Handicap, he should have outstanding prospects of completing a double for the in 53 3-ssec, the final three furlongs takEmphatic (Tucker) topped off a working gallop by running half a mile in 52 3-ssec. Lachlan (Mora) ran half a mile in 53 3-ssec, the final three furlongs tak?nS 39 4-ssec. Lachlan is a newcomer in the Belmont Hack Handicap, and has recent good form in the Auckland province.

Without having to do his best, Fair Chance (Morton) came from the half-mile in 53 3-ssec, the final three furlongs taking 39 3-ssec. He will be a worthy favourite for the Awatea Handicap. Ocean Flight (Low) created a good impression by the manner in which he completed an easy seven furlongs in Imin 40 2-ssec, the last three in 41 3-ssec. Lack of recent racing was responsible for Ocean Flight failing in the Wellington Handicap, and he will be much harder to beat m the Watkins Handicap. Lingual (Smith) and Estimate (Mudford) were together throughout five furlongs in lmm 9sec. the last four in 54sec and the final three in 40sec. Both worked well, especially Estimate, which has settled down well since she arrived at Trentham. i vory (Wylie) went pleasingly over 5 & m ile in 52sec. He was close up fifth m the October Handicap last week, and appears to be improving. Lucky Sal (Perawiti) did not have to do her best to run half a mile in 53sec. She came from the three furlongs in 39

A newcomer in the Awatea Handicap, Tutanekai ran half a mile in 54sec, the final three furlongs taking 40 l-ssec. He asked * or an effort at anv stage. Poetical (Mora) ran the last four of an easy seven furlongs in 55sec. Rag (Smith*) worked pleasingly when she finised a length and a half ahead of Absent (McFarlane) at the end of half a mile.
