TESS FIT FOR TRENTHAM

FINAL TRIAL AT RICCARTON RANGIORA CANDIDATES HOLD INTEREST Tess, the main South Island hope in the Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham tomorrow, was taken north last evening by her Riccarton trainer, J. E. Shaw. In her final trial for the fillies’ classic at Riccarton yesterday she dashed over three furlongs in 37 4-ssec on the trial grass. It was a very smart sprint under the conditions. The going was good, but there was a strong south-west wind. A. J. Stokes will ride Tess in the Desert Gold Stakes. Rangiora candidates provided most of the highlights of the training. Ngapunawai sprinted a fast half-mile; Dixie Leigh pleased over six furlongs; and Cloque mile Poilu teturned good figures for a Bon Soir (A. J. Williams) was shading Kiaree Beau (N. Parsons) recorded Imin 3o 2-ssec for seven furlongs and 51 3-ssec for the last four. Cloque (G. W. Mein) was galloping strongly on the outside of her stablemate, Sir Galahad (C. McDonald), ending a soundly-run mile. They recorded Imin 44 4-ssec for the distance, and 52 l-ssec for the last half-mile. Cloque has been racing soundly and should take beating in the North Canterbury Hack Handicap on Monday. Strong Pace Early Poilu (B. Taggart) sped from the mile to the half-mile in 49 4-ssec. Not surprisingly he weakened in the straight, but he got to the end of his mile in Imin 44 2-ssec. He gallops well enough to have a first-class chance in the hignweight at Rangiora. His recent form over hurdles has not been solid. Macduff (G. W. Mein), and Bosky (R. Blair) sprinted from the seven furlongs and recorded 50 4-ssec for the last halfmile. Cardinal King (F. H. Skelton) and Noroc (R. Blair) were companions over a mile. They recorded Imin 45 2-ssec and 52 1-5 sec for the last half.

Decipher (R. McKenzie) ran home from the mile in Imin 46sec, and recorded 52 2-5 sec for the last half. He is a fit lightweight for the North Canterbury Handicap on Monday. Dixie Leigh (N. Hoy) was running on a neck in front of Shoal (R. Blair) and Teko (M. D. Alexander), with Super Corn (B. Surton) weakening slightly three-quarters of a length back, at the end of a fast-run six furlongs. They recorded Imin 16 l-ssec for the distance and 51 2-ssec for the last half-mile. Super Corn did most of the pacemaking. Spike Jones (N. Hoy) and Passchencdaele (R. McKenzie) sprinted from the six furlongs on terms in Imin 19 4-ssec. They ran the last half-mile smoothly in a 3 2-ssec.

Adaris (D. F. Coombe) and Instanter (N. Cowles) recorded Imin 20 2-ssec for six furlongs, and 53 l-ssec for the last half-mile. Fairchild (B. Parsons) sprinted from the half-mile in 52 2-ssec. Sherpa (R. W. Gould) followed in 55sec, and Goldwyn (W. Quill) in 56 2-ssec.

Patient Policy Solex (I. Oldham) and Flightwyn (N. Hoy) sprinted their half-mile on terms in 52sec. Solex. a three-year-old son of Timanova, has been given plenty of time by C. C. McCarthy, but his preparation for racing has now started in earnest. McCarthy now’ trains Flightwyn (Callander—Excellent Flight). Ngapunawai (G. W. Mein) was kicked up in the straight to beat Motueka (B. Parsons) from the half-mile by two lengths in 48 4-ssec. Montrose (D. F. Coombe) held a halflength lead over Skylight (K. Cotton) ending half a mile in 53 4-ssec.

County Fermanagh (L. Yeo) had the same margin to spare from Jimmy Flash (R. McKenzie) after running half a mile in 49 3-ssec. Yeo is one of the latest newcomers to race riding- at Riccarton. He had seven rides at recent meetings at Reefton and Westport. Gone Away (C. Ryan) and Arosa (G. W. Mein) sprinted from the half-mile on terms in 50 l-ssec. Rani (N. Hoy) followed in 51 2-ssec and Inspire (L. Maguire) in 51 4-ssec. Renloch (F. H. Skelton) was too good for Royal Glade (M. D. Alexander) over half a mile. Renloch, easing near the finish, recorded 53sec. Shahwan (C. McDonald) led Luxurious (D. J. Thistoll) by a length and a half after sprinting from the three furlongs in 38 3-ssec It was a smart trial; they did not work up to speed quickly. Russleigh (M. D. Alexander) also recorded 38 3-ssec in her sprint from the three furlongs. She did her work effortlessly and should take beating whan she

switches to sprinting at the North Canterbury meeting. Overboard (B. Gordon) had an easy l-s n sec half-mile. He took 54 (W ; Hai ? lin > gave Keep Time (R.
