POLICE CADET SYSTEM
Early Introduction, Planned YOUTHS OF 16 TO 18 YEARS (Ntw .Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 11. A police cadet system will soon be established in New Zealand. This was announced by the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) today. Holland said that the system, under which would initially be enrolled a limited number of youths from 16 to 18 years of age for training in police work, would be designed to assist boys who wished to make a career in the Police Force. He said he had examined the working of the cadet system while he was in Britain earlier in the year, and had been impressed by the fine type of recruit it produced. Since nis return to New Zealand he had had the possibility of introducing the system here investigated by the special committee which reported on police training. The committee had seen great possibilities for the system in New Zealand. x Mr Holland said that the cadets would not be given police authority, but would undergo training at the new national police school, ana would also receive practical training in office work and in routine police duties in various divisions of the Police Force. At the end of their cadet training they be eligible for appointment as probationary constables. “The aim is to provide recruits who have received sound basic training and who should be capable of maintaining the highest standards of police conduct and traditions,” Mr Holland said. «“The armed forces have shown the value of cadet systems, and I am sure that ther proposed police cadet system will be of great benefit both to those who wish to join the poli’ce service and to the service itself.” Mr Holland said that details of cadet service and conditions were now being worked out, and a statement would be made later . about enrolments.
