Nuclear scientists have hopes of supercharging the ordinary garden cabbage into a giant radio-activated vegetable. An American scientist, Mr Arthur H Snell, of the Oak R dge National Laboratory, said this in a report on the use of radio-activity to the international “atoms for peace” conference today. “It may be that the average cabbage plant is not making the best use of its daylight hours,” he said. “When we have fuller knowledge and more perspective about plant nourishment and related pro». cesses, we can show the cabbage plant how it can grow into a super cabbage plant.” This possibility held out hopes not only for the average housewife but for people throughout the world who had never had cabbage fbr dinner, Mr Snell said.—Geneva, August 10.
